predominate. Maybe we can become whispers to him rather than irritating or redundant voices always battling to be heard.
Greed: Whispers? You mean like a whisper number at earnings time?
Fear: You know exactly what I mean. Now let's just try to cooperate.
Applying the Voice Dialogue Technique
As the previous example illustrated, when we can get both inner voices of fear and greed to really hear each other, it then becomes possible for them to stop fighting and work for the common cause. Each is then willing to quiet down a bit, and let another part, the voice of reason, be heard more clearly.
When you try this, it may take a while to really hear each voice as it comes up. But it is well worth the effort to not only know that you are feeling a specific emotion, but to also hear the associated thoughts that go with it. This is especially useful during trading, as fearful thoughts may then come through loud and clear. Then you can determine whether you ought to pay attention to what fear or greed is signaling. Here are the directions for you to work with this balancing tool:
1. Close your eyes. Get in touch with your own fear. If you have any trouble identifying this fearful part of yourself, remember the last time you felt fear while making a trade or watching the market. If you need to go back to the last real shot of anxiety you felt, do so, feeling the fear that was just behind the anxiety. Be very clear on what you were afraid of.
2. Now feel the fear again related to whatever you recall. Stay with it long enough to begin feeling it now.
3. While you're still feeling the fear, give this fear a voice. Begin to speak out loud, keeping your eyes closed so you can stay with the feeling. Begin with, ''I'm the fearful part of you . . . " and continue by describing yourself as this part.
4. Say out loud what your function is, what role you serve to the larger complex of parts that make up the whole self: "What I do for you is . . . " "If it weren't for me, you'd . . . "
5. Be sure to include how you want to be appreciated for your contribution to the whole self. "I want you to appreciate me for . . . "
